Recognizing a “fixer-upper” energy transformation, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) presented this month’s Triple E Award—for Energy Efficiency Effort—to OCI Associates, Inc. (OCI). OCI teamed up with Duke Energy Florida, LLC (DEF) for an “energy-efficiency retrofit” on a 30+ year-old office building, reducing the company’s operational costs and preserving its market edge.
“We applaud OCI’s management for installing efficient HVAC motors, demand control ventilation, and energy efficient lighting that’s projected to save 65,526 kilowatt-hours annually,” said PSC Chairman Julie Brown.
“Our efforts to minimize adverse effects on the environment from new construction led us to our decision to repurpose a 30-year old, 3-story, office building in Maitland into our new corporate headquarters,” said OCI’s Director of Engineering, Jason Smith. “DEF explained how we could use energy efficiency upgrades during the retrofit process, tailored to meet the needs of our building. The result will be ongoing energy savings.”
“During the retrofit, OCI worked very hard to ensure the building was as energy efficient as possible while keeping its existing footprint,” said Alex Glenn, Duke Energy Florida state president. “By installing a Thermal Storage Unit—very rare for this size customer—the company will also significantly reduce its Summer Demand Cooling Load. We are proud to have helped OCI become an energy efficiency leader.”
The PSC encourages cost-effective conservation and renewable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and defer the need for new generating capacity through the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.
Covering the state’s five major geographic areas, each month the PSC presents its Triple E Award to a local business that has accomplished superior energy efficiency. Look for this year’s PSC Triple E Award recipients under Hot Topics on the PSC’s homepage, www.floridapsc.com.
