The Live Oak’s Bible Baptist Church’s website, highlights “faith like a grain of mustard seed.” As an appropriately planted mustard seed grows a congregation, the church also grew their efforts to become more energy efficient, lowering energy costs by 53 percent and earning the Florida Public Service Commission’s (PSC) November Triple E Award for Energy Efficiency Efforts.
“Like so many other individuals and businesses throughout Florida, churches are also seeking ways to cut costs to better benefit their ministries ,” said PSC Chairman Julie Brown. “Working with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), the Bible Baptist Church found creative, cost-effective ways to upgrade facilities and lower costs.”
“As a non-profit, we have to carefully plan our investments. By planting our seeds in FPL’s energy evaluation services, we reaped rewards for our members,” said Bible Baptist Church Pastor Brent Whittle. “Not only have we reduced our electricity costs by 53 percent, but we’ve helped our church save more than $2,000 annually.”
Bible Baptist Church invested in facility upgrades to qualify for FPL’s General Service rate. Improvements and the resulting energy savings include:
• Replacing all 113 incandescent light bulbs in the sanctuary to LED bulbs– reducing power use in the sanctuary building by 6.2 KW.
• Replacing an AC unit (7.5 SEER) with a substantially more efficient system (14 SEER) – reducing power use in the sanctuary by 3.7 KW.
• Creating a new account to separate service provided to the church’s two main buildings–reducing power use in the sanctuary by an additional 13.8 KW.
“We commend the leaders of the Bible Baptist Church for their foresight in making a wise investment in energy conservation improvements that will result in ongoing, long-term savings in monthly energy costs for the church and its congregation,” said Wayne Besley, FPL Director of Demand Side Management Programs. “Their success is a testament to how non-profit organizations can benefit from FPL’s free energy evaluation program and services.”
Covering the state’s five major geographic areas, each month the PSC presents its Triple E Award to a local business that has accomplished superior energy efficiency. Look for past PSC Triple E Award recipients under Hot Topics on the PSC’s homepage, www.floridapsc.com. The PSC encourages cost-effective conservation and renewable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and defer the need for new generating capacity through the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.
