Tomorrow, August 11, marks National 811 Day, and the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) reminds residents and businesses to call 8-1-1 to have underground utility lines marked prior to any digging project. Every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because of someone digging without calling 8-1-1.
With more than 20 million miles of underground utilities nationwide, accidental dig-ins can occur anywhere there is a buried utility line, from a residential backyard to a major construction site.
“Calling 811 has the potential to reduce frustrating service outages while saving time, money, and, most importantly, lives,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham. “No matter how large or small the project, we urge you to call 8-1-1 first.”
Your Florida 8-1-1 call connects you to Sunshine 8-1-1. Their operators notify your local utilities, who will send locators to your dig site to mark the approximate location of buried lines with flags or paint.
Remember to call 8-1-1 at least two working days before a digging project. For more information, please visit www.sunshine811.com.
