PSC Offers 500 kWh of Annual Energy Savings to Mark Viva Florida 500

TALLAHASSEE — Throughout Florida’s historic 500th anniversary year, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) will help our state continue its longevity by providing monthly energy conservation tips—the 2013 Energy Saving Challenge.  Participating residents can save up to 500 kilowatt hours (kWh) or more of energy through December that will save them money and help protect Florida’s resources for residents and visitors to enjoy for another 500 years.

“Viva Florida 500 recognizes an important milestone in Florida’s…and America’s…history,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé.  “While the PSC’s mission does not promote Florida’s places and cultural achievements, we do promote safe and reasonable utility service, including conservation, as important to Florida’s future."

Florida’s reputation as a one-of-a-kind cultural destination is a testament to its diverse, innovative, and resourceful residents,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner.  “The PSC’s energy challenge will help future generations of Floridians enjoy the great state we call home, and we welcome them as a Viva Florida 500 partner.”

“Saving 500 kWh of energy annually will have lasting impacts for residents who make conservation habits a way of life and for the state resources that are preserved,” Chairman Brisé added.  “The more residents who commit to follow our 2013 Energy Saving Challenge, the more energy will be saved this year and for years to come.”

To begin the PSC’s 2013 Energy Saving Challenge, we’re encouraging residents to get a home energy audit, offered free of charge from their electric provider.  The audit will suggest specific energy saving improvements for your home.  This will help you start off on the right foot to meet or exceed your annual energy saving goal.

January’s easy conservation tip is to change your home’s incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL).  Changing a typical 60 watt incandescent bulb to a comparable CFL can reduce your lighting energy use by 75 percent.  Join the PSC’s 2013 Energy Saving Challenge and track your new conservation habits and monthly energy savings.  Look for next month’s PSC challenge and visit our website to find more energy saving tips:  http://www.floridapsc.com/consumers/tips.

About Viva Florida 500

Viva Florida 500 is a statewide initiative led by the Florida Department of State, under the leadership of Governor Rick Scott, to highlight the 500 years of historic people, places, and events in present-day Florida since the arrival of Juan Ponce de León to the land he named La Florida in 1513.

While Florida’s Native American heritage dates back more than 12,000 years, Spain’s claim in 1513 began a new era.  In 2013, Florida will mark 500 years of history and diverse cultural heritage – a claim no other state in America can make – and promote the place where the world’s cultures began to unite and transform into the great nation we know today as the United States of America.

Viva Florida 500 will occur year-round in 2013, and its many partners are planning more than 150 events statewide. The goal is to promote 500 years of Florida’s history – its people, places and cultural achievements – and this important milestone in American and Florida history.
