When
you
prepare to move, notify all of your utility companies as soon
as possible.
This will ensure that service to your new residence will not be
disrupted.
Following these tips might also prevent you from receiving a bill for
service
you did not use.
Electric, Natural Gas, and
Water and
Wastewater
- Call your electric, natural
gas,
water
and
wastewater companies to request termination of service at a specific
location
on a specific date. Keep a record of the date, time, and the name
of the utility representative who took your order.
- Be sure to call your utility
companies
early
enough to ensure that service to your old residence will be terminated
and service at your new residence will be initiated on time.
Don't
wait until the day before you move.
- Make sure the utility
companies
have
your forwarding
address and that you have filed a forwarding order with the United
States Postal Service.
- Request a final reading on
your
electric,
natural gas, and water service to be sure your final bill is accurate.
- Make sure that each utility
company
has taken
a final reading for the previous resident's service at your new
residence.
- Don't
assume that, if the
electricity,
gas,
or water service is on at your new address, that it is okay to use the
service. Make sure that you have service established in your name.
Telephone
- You may be able to keep your
old
telephone
number. Contact your local telephone company well in advance of
the
move to determine if you can keep the old number and just transfer the
service to the new address.
- Do not assume that you will
have
the
same
long distance calling plan or even the same long distance company if
you
have to get a new telephone number. Call your long distance
company
and make sure the company has your new telephone number and has an
account established
for you under that number with the calling plan you want.
- If
you have more than one
line in
the
home,
be sure that all lines are switched and that all lines are subscribed
to
your preferred long distance company.
DEPOSITS,
PLUS INTEREST, ARE
USUALLY
APPLIED TO THE FINAL BILL AND ANY CREDIT BALANCE WILL BE REFUNDED TO
THE
CUSTOMER.
REMEMBER,
IF YOU DON'T CLOSE THE ACCOUNT AT YOUR OLD RESIDENCE, THE CHARGES ON
THE ACCOUNT ARE STILL YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
