Commission to Host Economic Development Workshop

TALLAHASSEE — The relationship between Florida’s investor-owned utilities and the state’s small and medium businesses will be the focus of a Florida Public Service Commission workshop April 12, 2006.

“It’s no secret that small and medium businesses are the engines that drive our economy, generating a vast number of new jobs and employing a majority of the workforce,” Commissioner Isilio Arriaga said.  “In light of this, I believe we should encourage economic development wherever possible and our utilities are an integral part of that initiative.”

The purpose of the workshop is to identify ways in which the large investor-owned utilities contribute to economic development in the state, with specific focus on the efforts of the utilities to procure services from small businesses.

Invited speakers include:

·       Commissioner Harold D. Williams, of the Maryland Public Service Commission and chairman of the Utility Market Access Partnership.

·       John Adams, president of Enterprise Florida.

·       Windell Page, executive director, Office of Supplier Diversity, Florida Department of Management Services.

The workshop begins at 1:30 p.m. in Room 148 of the Betty Easley Conference Center in Tallahassee.
