You’re never too old to learn energy efficiencies, as demonstrated by the Florida Public Service Commission’s (PSC) March Triple E Award—for Energy Efficiency Effort—recipient, the Jefferson Center, a senior living community in Sarasota. The Center’s administration has been working with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) on a number of energy initiatives, including educating residents and staff on how to conserve.
“We commend the Jefferson Center for involving its residents and staff in energy conservation best practices and in monitoring their progress to reduce monthly energy consumption and costs,” said PSC Chairman Julie Brown. “The Center also deserves recognition for being the first residential apartment facility to participate in the coveted Sarasota County Green Business Partnership program.”
“Jefferson Center has implemented several FPL efficiency programs—including Window Replacement, Reflective Roof, and Chiller Replacement—to conserve energy and reduce our operating costs,” said Dawn Lucido, Center Administrator. “Our residents have also embraced energy efficiencies as we now use digital thermostats, energy-efficient appliances, CFL light bulbs in apartments and common areas, and LED lights in the parking lot. They’re great at recycling, too!”
“FPL was pleased to work cooperatively with the Center on ways to use energy more efficiently and reduce its operating costs,” said Wayne Besley, FPL Director of Demand Side Management Programs. “By upgrading its HVAC systems with an oil-free chiller system, the Center substantially reduced energy usage and, according to our customer, also saves approximately 250,000 gallons of water each year.”
Covering the state’s five major geographic areas, each month the PSC presents its Triple E Award to a local business that has accomplished superior energy efficiency. The PSC encourages cost-effective conservation and renewable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and defer the need for new generating capacity through the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.
