The Florida Public Service Commission today approved Florida City Gas’s (City Gas) SAFE (Safety, Access, and Facility Enhancement) program to replace aging pipes to improve safety and reliability.
SAFE program work is part of a $105 million project upgrade over 10 years that will relocate and replace 254.3 miles of 4-inch and smaller mains and associated facilities from rear property easements to the street front. The relocation and replacement program will remove most of the utility’s 61.3 miles of unprotected steel mains and improve service reliability, safety, and facility access due to vegetation overgrowth, landscaping, and construction in the easements.
“The Commission commends City Gas for hastening its natural gas infrastructure upgrades cost effectively to ensure long-term safety and reliability,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham. “Improved facility access is also expected to enhance the utility’s customer service, as well as reduce the potential for gas theft and facility damage.”
For a residential customer, using 240 therms per year or 20 therms per month, the SAFE monthly surcharge will be $.71 in the first year of the program beginning January 2016. For customers using over 6,000 therms annually, the SAFE monthly surcharge will be $1.31.
The PSC has previously approved cast iron/bare steel replacement program surcharges for Peoples Gas System, Florida Public Utilities Company, and Florida Division of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation.
City Gas serves 106,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Miami-Dade, Broward, Brevard, Palm Beach, Hendry, Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties.
