Commission Approves Conservation Incentives for Electric Consumers

TALLAHASSEE — On Tuesday, the Florida Public Service Commission approved changes to an array of electric conservation and energy efficiency programs aimed at reducing demand.

The changes provide increased financial incentives for residential, commercial, and industrial customers of Florida Power & Light and Progress Energy Florida who take measures to make homes and businesses more energy efficient.  The two utilities combined have more than five million customer accounts.

“I can not overstate the importance of conservation and energy efficiency for consumers and for Florida’s economy,” Commission Chairman Lisa Edgar said.  “Less energy use means less vulnerability to the escalating prices of fossil fuels.”

Changes approved Tuesday allow the utilities to increase credits to existing homes and new construction for raising insulation values, making duct repairs, and installing high-efficiency electric heat pumps.  Comparable programs exist for commercial and industrial users who elect high-efficiency heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems.
