Annual Telecommunications Report Shows Wireless Trend

TALLAHASSEE — The Public Service Commission (PSC) will deliver its annual Report on the Status of Competition in the Telecommunications Industry (Report) to the governor and state legislature on December 1.  Based on data requests sent to 406 telecommunications companies operating in Florida, the Report shows industry trends during the past year.

This year's Report is the first one to document the growing impact of wireless service and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the telecommunications market in Florida.  Residential access lines decreased across the state while the number of wireless telephones grew to more than 12.5 million.  Florida also has an estimated 662,000 VoIP customers.  The Report's data, compiled and analyzed by the PSC staff, indicate that competition is working to provide additional choices for consumers.

"The substitution of wireless for wireline service shows the evolving competitive market for voice communications in our state," commented PSC Chairman Lisa Polak Edgar.  Although wireless, VoIP, and broadband are expanding sectors in the telecommunications market in Florida, these services are not subject to the PSC's jurisdiction.

The Report on the Status of Competition in the Telecommunications Industry is available on the PSC website
