FLORIDA PSC COMMISSIONER NATHAN A. SKOP MEETS WITH LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO PROMOTE RENEWABLE ENERGY ALTERNATIVES

“Renewable energy provides an attractive source of clean energy that is free from harmful emissions,” said Commissioner Skop. “Although renewable energy sources alone will not preclude the need to build additional base load generation, adding renewable energy projects will play an important role in achieving a more diverse generation portfolio within the state, reducing Florida’s dependence on natural gas and foreign oil, meeting Florida’s growing energy demand, and preserving the environment.”

During the meetings, Commissioner Skop highlighted the many benefits of renewable energy and emphasized the proactive role that local governments could take in supporting the process through embracing the adoption of renewables and the identification of proposed sites to accommodate renewable energy projects.

Florida currently lacks any wind power generation.  “Assuming that wind turbine design limitations are adequate to withstand hurricane force winds, the only remaining hurdles are economic and permitting considerations,” said Commissioner Skop.  “I am hopeful that these issues can be addressed, and that local governments will support the addition of wind power to achieve a more diverse generation mix within the state.”
