PSC Kicks Off National Consumer Protection Week by Helping Residents Manage Utility Bills

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) is partnering with WORKFORCE plus during National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW), March 1-7, to assist Florida’s unemployed residents by showing them how to save money on their telephone and utility bills.  PSC Chairman Matthew M. Carter II will join WORKFORCE plus CEO Kimberly Moore on Monday, March 2, to launch NCPW activities at the WORKFORCE plus office located in Tallahassee.

“Now, more than ever, Floridians need to practice energy and water conservation tips to help manage their bills and benefit their pocketbooks,” said Chairman Carter.  “This week we will also be signing up eligible residents to receive a discount on basic telephone service through the Lifeline Assistance program.”

This year’s NCPW theme, Nuts and Bolts: Tools for Today’s Economy, is a nationwide effort to help consumers, in communities where they live and work, get the most for their money.  In keeping with the theme, the PSC’s conservation and Lifeline program messages will also be highlighted at events in Jacksonville on March 4 and Tampa on March 6.

“In challenging times it is paramount that residents of our Florida communities be aware of the resources that are available to them,” Ms. Moore said.  “Under the partnership with the Public Service Commission, we will create a grass-roots effort of empowerment, with the expectation of connecting the thousands of individuals we serve annually with this cost-saving  and life enhancing opportunity. ”

The NCPW kickoff event will take place at the following time and location:

Monday, March 2, 2009
11:30 a.m.
FORCE plus Leon Office
2525 S. Monroe Street
Tallahassee, Florida
