PSC Kicks Off National Lifeline Awareness Week

TALLAHASSEE — Offering Florida’s unemployed residents a break on phone service, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) today kicked off its third National Lifeline Awareness Week in Tallahassee to help those seeking employment at workforce centers.  Eligible clients learned how to save $162 annually on their local phone bills through the Link-Up Florida and Lifeline Assistance discounted telephone programs.

Highlighting the Lifeline program’s success and the PSC’s partnership with WORKFORCE plus, PSC Commissioner Lisa Polak Edgar, was joined at the kickoff by Kim Moore, CEO of WORKFORCE plus, Representative Alan Williams, J.R. Kelly, Public Counsel for the State of Florida, and Akin Akinyemi, Leon County Commissioner At-Large.

“This year's National Lifeline Awareness Week helps highlight the state’s regional workforce centers that do an excellent job in helping job seekers in their communities who can benefit from these money-saving programs,” said Commissioner Edgar.  “The national spotlight on Link-Up and Lifeline, coupled with our partnerships with workforce centers, will help clients in need afford one of today’s basic necessities–phone service.”

Joining other states to raise awareness for National Lifeline Awareness Week, September 12-18, Florida’s kickoff begins a series of statewide events next week to reach residents who are eligible for the programs.  The PSC will be at workforce centers in Sarasota on September 13, Madison and Fort Myers on September 14, Palm Coast and Palm Bay on September 15, and Rockledge on September 16 to help eligible participants sign up for the programs.

“In challenging times it is paramount that residents of our Florida communities be aware that discounted phone service is available to them,” Ms. Moore said.  “Through the partnership with the Public Service Commission, we will ensure that our community residents have access to this money saving option while they work to secure employment.”

The federal Lifeline Assistance program offers customers who participate in certain public assistance programs–or who qualify based on income–a basic telephone service discount of at least $13.50 per month, or $162 per year.  Link-Up Florida provides a 50 percent reduction in the telephone service installation charge, up to a maximum of $30, for qualifying households that do not currently have telephone service.  Both landline and wireless providers offer the Lifeline program.  To access Lifeline applications and for more information, visit
