PSC Celebrates Consumers during
National Consumer Protection Week

Consumers are central to the work we do at the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC). We celebrate consumers year-round, and we make extra time in March each year for consumer outreach during National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW).

For ten years, the PSC has joined government agencies, advocacy organizations, and private sector groups nationwide to highlight NCPW. It's a coordinated campaign to promote education and events that encourage consumers to take full advantage of their consumer rights and make better-informed decisions.

During this year's NCPW, March 5-11, 2017, the PSC launched a Twitter campaign, using the hashtag #PSCCelebratesConsumersNCPW. Throughout the week, @floridapsc Twitter followers received daily consumer tips from PSC Commissioners and highlights from the PSC's NCPW educational activities.

Along with my fellow Commissioners, each of our #PSCCelebratesConsumersNCPW consumer tips is below, and you can access our videos here.
  • Chairman Julie I. Brown
Know your rights as a utility customer. Your utility should follow its billing, credit, dispute, and disconnect practices fairly. Contact customer service or the PSC if you have concerns or questions.

  • Commissioner Art Graham
Learn how to identify and protect yourself from scams. If you have any doubt about a call, e-mail, or visit from someone claiming to represent your utility, call the company's customer service center for assistance.

  • Commissioner Ronald A. Brisé
Research your utilities' energy efficiency and water conservation programs. Check their website for efficiency tips and for current programs and incentives to help you save money on your utility bills.

  • Commissioner Jimmy Patronis
Protect your identity. Keep your name, your social security number, and your credit card and bank account numbers safe. Never provide personal, confidential, or financial information to unknown individuals.

  • Commissioner Donald J. Polmann
Check your utility bills each month. Make sure you're being billed correctly, and contact the utility immediately with any questions about your bill.
PSC staff also made presentations to consumers in Winter Springs, Winter Park, Orlando, Hollywood, Miramar, and Hallandale Beach, showing them how to save money through energy and water conservation and how to sign up for the Lifeline Assistance telephone and broadband discount program, if they qualify. Search for event highlights on Twitter @floridapsc, #PSCCelebratesConsumersNCPW.

As the 19th Annual NCPW theme suggests, "Information is the Best Defense." If you are an informed consumer, you can defend yourself against deceptive practices and fraudulent behavior. The PSC has educational materials on a variety of topics at www.FloridaPSC.com that consumers can download to share with family and friends or use at community events. Consumers can also access our Consumer Connection Newsletter for consumer tip videos and current PSC consumer news. You can subscribe to the quarterly newsletter here.

The PSC wants Florida consumers to know we're here every week of the year, providing information and assistance and making sure they receive safe and reliable utility service. For assistance or information, call our toll-free number, 1-800-342-3552. We look forward to hearing from consumers whenever they need us!
